Microbiology & Quality Associates, a contract laboratory and an Analytical Lab Group portfolio company in Concord, Calif., is looking for an experienced full-time Virology Services Director for the Virology and Molecular Services group. MQA has been in business since 2006 providing services in Northern California and across the U.S., and is looking to expand our Virology Services group. MQA provides microbiology, virology, mycoplasma and molecular biology testing services, calibration, validation and contract manufacturing services.

The successful candidate will possess extensive experience managing a Virology lab specialized in virology, virus clearance studies, tissue culture and molecular biology testing. This position performs and directs assays according to and in compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP), Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and/or Points to Consider (PTC) guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and acts as study director as required. This position also supports the sales group by providing technical review of proposals, sales presentations related to virology services and discussing projects with clients.

Duties

  • Manages the Virology Services operations (virology, cell culture, mycoplasma and molecular biology labs) and all assigned staff.
  • Responsible for training, managing and evaluating as well as coordinating, scheduling and assigning work and maintaining facility’s standards.
  • Responsible for GxP compliance and safety compliance for the Virology Services group.
  • Develops budget and resource plans (people, equipment and laboratory space) based on business demands and is responsible for cost control of the Virology Services operations.
  • Supervise and mentor scientists responsible for generating molecular biology assays and validations.
  • Responsible for the department P&L.
  • Directly involved in the decisions/activities to grow the Virology Services business.
  • Defines operational metrics and service measures to ensure delivery of results to customers is on time and in compliance with procedures and scientifically sound.
  • Design or oversee performance virus clearance studies for biotech clients in compliance with regulatory regulations and client needs.
  • Oversee the following:
    • Performance of virus clearance using AKTA chromatography system and other techniques
    • Preparation of virus banks under BSL-2 conditions
    • Screening cell lines for adventitious virus contamination
    • Preparation and maintenance of cell banks
    • Performance of quantifying cytotoxicity assays, including luminescent and fluorescent assays
    • Development of cell-based or virology assay based on client and regulatory requirements
    • Oversee DNA-based screening assays for mycoplasma and virus pathogens
  • Ensure standard operating procedures are followed.
  • Accurately document all work in accordance with GLP or GMP.
  • Ensure good documentation practices are followed.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in microbiology or virology with 3 years of experience, or master’s degree with 5 years of experience
  • Extensive hands-on experience in cell culture, virus clearance studies, virology, mycoplasma testing and molecular biology
  • Experience working in a GxP laboratory environment
  • Knowledge of GMP, testing requirements for production cell banks, biotechnology process virus clearance studies and good documentation practices
  • Experience using AKTA chromatography system
  • Experience working with human pathogenic viruses in a BSL 2 environment
  • Experience designing DNA and RNA studies for screening for human and mammalian viruses

Microbiology & Quality Associates, an Analytical Lab Group portfolio company and a contract testing laboratory in Concord, Calif., has a full-time opening for a Manufacturing Associate to work in the cell banking and aseptic filling of reagents in a cleanroom environment. Candidates should have a background in science and cell culture, must be able to follow instructions and work in a cleanroom performing repetitive steps, as well as possess the ability to focus and a strong attention to detail.

Position Description

Under minimal supervision, the Manufacturing Associate will perform a broad range of manufacturing activities according to standard operating procedures (SOPs), including thawing, culturing and differentiating cells.

  • Perform aseptic filling operations as part of a team
  • Maintain batch and system records as required throughout the manufacturing process
  • Convert manufacturing practices into written SOPs and batch records
  • Prepare media and other reagents according to SOPs and maintain inventory for these materials
  • Ensure finished products comply with applicable regulations, cGMPs, QA/QC and safety requirements
  • Design, execute and report on experiments intended to improve manufacturing processes

MQA Laboratories is looking for laboratory technicians to perform environmental monitoring functions at client facilities and microbiology testing in the microbiology lab. This is a temporary full-time position, depending on the project needs. The position will last at least three months, with potential for regular employment. The schedule will be Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but you must be able to work flexible hours, including different shifts and weekends.
