In the News: Will the FDA Change Its Name?

As part of a government reform plan, the Trump administration has proposed changing the Food and Drug Administration’s name to the Federal Drug Administration and shift the agency’s food programs to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The change would shift about 5,000 full-time equivalent employees and $1.3 billion from the FDA to the USDA.

The Department of Health and Human Services also would get a new name — the Department of Health and Public Welfare — and would take over non-commodity nutrition assistance programs from the USDA.

The proposal indicates the change may require legislative action.
