The CDC has named the Coronavirus identified in the recent outbreak as SARS-CoV-2, which causes the disease named COVID-19. The CDC also has specified the safety level for working with this virus as Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3). While we are evaluating the possibilities for testing with the new strain of human Coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, we do have another strain of human Coronavirus, strain 229E, available for testing

The EPA has implemented the Emerging Pathogen program for addressing disinfectant claims for this virus. Health Canada has a similar program to the EPA emerging pathogen program and has implemented that as well. For EN submissions, if you have performed and passed testing against the required organisms, this may suggest your product is effective against the new Human Coronavirus. What claims may be allowed in countries outside of the U.S. and Canada would need to be evaluated by the appropriate agencies in each country.

We will continue to monitor the information coming from CDC and other sources on the safety of working with this virus and will continue to have discussions about offering testing against this particular strain of Human Coronavirus. In the meantime, we do offer testing against Human Coronavirus, strain 229E, and many other viruses. Additionally, we offer technical guidance and testing plans that allow our clients to develop and market their products aimed at Helping Protect Life™.
